Turning off Autopilot this Holiday Season

As the Fall season wraps up, many of us experience a mixture of emotions as the holidays' approach. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, November and December can be hectic times of the year. I like to remind my clients and myself that practicing mindfulness can make the difference between a stressful, whirlwind number of weeks and finding ways to appreciate the season genuinely.

One of the most common statements I hear from clients during this time is, "I have so much I have to do, and with so little time." While I understand the overwhelming feeling of additional tasks on top of our already busy lives, I like to ask, "What is something you DON'T have to do? What is something you can take OFF your plate?" The pressure to "do everything" can become paralyzing. However, I encourage clients to question this: Is it necessary to make another trip to Home Goods this week? When the day arrives, will you focus on the details of your decorations? If the answer leans even a bit toward "no," try removing that task from your to-do list altogether.

Making a list of your values can serve as a handy reminder of what your intention throughout the season. It’s simple!

  • Make a list of your values.

  • Keep that list easily accessible.

  • Refer to your list when making decisions about time and finances.

When your thoughts race through societal or familial expectations, refer to a mantra that calls you back to the present. If you don't have a mantra that helps ground you, try repeating to yourself, "I am here. This is now."

We can also remember that two opposing things can be true simultaneously, such as the holidays are both wonderful and challenging, and this season brings me both joy and stress. And finally, if you want to slow down with the season as we head into Winter, staying mindful of what your body is asking for and what might serve you best is powerful. You and how you feel are way more important than whatever you might be rushing out to buy at Costco, I promise.

I hope you each find ways to enjoy your holiday and festivities! Remember, you're only a human, and you're doing an amazing job.
