Struggling is Not a Weakness

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, as noted by the American Psychiatric Association, have the longest life expectancy of any ethnic group in America. This resilience is a testament to their strength. However, it's important to note that this group is also the least likely to seek mental health services compared to any other group. This lack of mental health services is not because AAPIs have a reduced likelihood of struggling mentally and emotionally - many different factors at play influence this statistic.

It's important to acknowledge that, historically, mental health struggles tend to be viewed as a weakness in many AAPI cultures. The high value placed on stoicism and self-reliance can make seeking support feel like an admission of failure.

Financial barriers also play a significant role in limiting AAPIs' access to mental health services. As we know, many people may lack comprehensive insurance or the financial means to cover the cost of therapy, further hindering their ability to seek support.

If you're struggling to find support, remember that it's okay to ask for help. There are resources such as the Asian Mental Health Collective (you'll find some AACG therapists there, too!), CAATCH, or the Asian Resource Hub. You can also email us at info@amandaatkinschicago.com, and we can connect you to a therapist who feels like the right fit.
